One thing I recently learned is grenadine is pomegranate syrup flavored not cherry. For some reason I always thought grenadine was cherry flavored. I might have missed that lesson when I went to bartending school 20 years ago. well, after reading the great reviews, I hate to leave a not so great one, however, we just thought this tasted like fizzy oj. I might decrease the amount of oj next time and see if that makes it better. It was refreshing and pretty, just not anything too spectacular. UPDATE- Okay, we tried them again, and this time I only used 1/4 cup orange juice, used about 3/4 cup sprite and 2 TBSP grenadine. MUCH BETTER this time!

I said I found it here and they all said Let me see the recipe! I want to try! Anyways Shirley temples are now my favorite drink in the world! This was great - it took me back to when I had dinner out with my grandparents when I was a kid. It was pretty close to what I remembered. I had a jar of maraschino cherries to polish off, so I made a bunch of these. I'd never used grenadine syrup before, but I found out where to get some. I did make this exactly as written, and mentioning the straw was a nice touch - it's perfect for trying to spear the cherry at the bottom of the drink when you're done - another fun thing I remember from my childhood. One important omission, though - this should be served in a glass filled with ice; an iceless version is not the same. Also, fresh lemon-lime flavored carbonated beverage is a must too - as it goes flat, the drink loses some of its original appeal.
